What Is Lenire?

Lenire is a non-invasive, at-home medical device that trains the brain to respond to tinnitus in a calmer, less reactive way.

How Lenire works: sound and gentle tongue stimulation for tinnitus

How Lenire Works

It works through dual stimulation:

Auditory Nerve – Soothing sound delivered through headphones

Trigeminal Nerve – Gentle electrical pulses to the tongue

This pairing encourages neuroplasticity, allowing the brain to “re-map” its response to tinnitus.

What Is the Lenire Device?

Headphones: Bluetooth headphones, included with Lenire, deliver customized sounds that activate the auditory nerve to the brain.

Tonguetip®: Designed specifically for tinnitus, it sits comfortably in the closed mouth. Tiny electrodes deliver mild, safe pulses to the surface of the tip of the tongue.

Controller: A lightweight handheld device to start, pause and resume a session and adjust the sound volume and tongue stimulation.

Your audiologist customizes the settings to your tinnitus after an assessment confirms Lenire is suitable for you.

Why Lenire is Different

Works on how the brain responds to tinnitus

Designed specifically for tinnitus

Studied in clinical trials and real-world use

Used in the comfort of your own home

What the Research Shows

Lenire is the first device of its kind granted De Novo approval by the FDA for tinnitus, following a large controlled clinical trial (TENT-A3):

70.5% of people with moderate or worse tinnitus had a meaningful reduction in tinnitus severity with Lenire, after sound-only therapy had little effect.

88.6% of trial participants would recommend treating tinnitus with Lenire.

Zero serious adverse events related to Lenire were reported in the trial.

In a 2025 real-world study of 220 U.S. patients published in Communications Medicine, 91.5% had a clinically meaningful reduction in tinnitus after 12 weeks.

As featured in The Washington Post: “New tinnitus treatment, bimodal neuromodulation, targets the brain” (2024).

Who Is Lenire For?

Lenire is intended to relieve the symptoms of tinnitus in adults with moderate or worse tinnitus. Your audiologist checks suitability case by case.

Lenire is not used (unless directed by a physician or dentist) if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other active implanted device; are pregnant; have epilepsy or another condition that can cause loss of consciousness; have reduced feeling in the tongue, or sores or inflammation in the mouth; have nerve pain in the head or neck; have Ménière's disease; have tinnitus from an objective source; or have oral piercings.

Possible side effects include mild tinnitus fluctuations, mild allergic reaction to device materials, mild tongue numbness or discomfort, dizziness and headaches. For more about qualification, contraindications, warnings and precautions, visit lenire.com/us.

Your Lenire Treatment Journey

At Sounds of Life Hearing Center, tinnitus treatment starts with understanding you, not choosing a device. Lenire is one possible tool within a comprehensive, individualized tinnitus management plan. It is not appropriate for everyone and is not prescribed or fitted simply because a patient requests it.

If Lenire is clinically appropriate, it may be part of your plan alongside other strategies. Other approaches may be recommended instead, and completing an evaluation does not guarantee a Lenire recommendation.

1. Diagnostic Evaluation

A comprehensive hearing and tinnitus assessment. Eligible diagnostic tests are billed to insurance where applicable.

2. Consultation & Treatment Planning

A separate $500 Tinnitus Consultation & Advanced Treatment Planning: advanced history, review of outside records, education and counseling, and an individualized plan.

3. Your Personalized Plan

We discuss the options that fit, including whether Lenire has a role, based on your findings and goals, not on a request to purchase a device.

4. Treatment & Monitoring

If Lenire is chosen: personalized fitting, two 30-minute sessions a day at home, and follow-up through 12 months.

This isn't a one-size-fits-all solution. We tailor care to you.

  • In-office fitting: individualized programming, TTS calibration, oral cavity check, training, starter accessories, and your first 30-minute session supervised in the office
  • Two-week follow-up, typically by telehealth
  • In-person follow-ups at 6 and 12 weeks, and at 6 and 12 months, with repeat THI and TFI questionnaires
  • Up to three additional visits when clinically needed

Packages are patient-specific and non-returnable. Prices current as of October 2026 and subject to change.

Is Lenire Right for You?

Follow a structured treatment plan

Engage with close follow-up and expert guidance

Your evaluation and consultation show whether Lenire is your next step, or whether another approach fits better.

“Dr. Curtis may have saved my life. I suddenly developed tinnitus, and it was driving me crazy. Before I found Dr. Curtis I'd been to two different ENTs who basically told me to ‘avoid quiet.’ As an introvert who spends a lot of time thinking, I couldn't do that. I was in agony wondering if I'd ever be able to enjoy silence again. I was freaking out in her office telling her all this, and she expertly calmed me down and told me that she could help me. I found Dr. Curtis on Google, and right away her website told me she was frustrated with how other ENTs tell people with tinnitus to ‘avoid quiet.’ She understands tinnitus better than any other doctor I've seen (she's had it her entire life) and will actually treat your tinnitus. I purchased a Lenire device from her to treat my tinnitus, and the results were amazing. After a few months, I notice my tinnitus much less often, it's not as prominent when I do notice it, and most importantly it doesn't bother me nearly as much as it used to. Sometimes, I can even enjoy silence. Thank you, Dr. Curtis. You gave me back peace and quiet. You gave me back my life. If you're suffering from tinnitus, you don't have to! Get yourself to Dr. Curtis.”

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lenire Treatment Program at Sounds of Life Hearing Center costs $4,715. It includes the Lenire device and initial Tonguetip Stimulator (TTS), your in-office fitting and training (with your first 30-minute session supervised in the office), a two-week follow-up (typically by telehealth), in-person follow-ups at 6 and 12 weeks and at 6 and 12 months, and up to three additional visits when clinically needed. It does not include the diagnostic evaluation or the separate $500 Tinnitus Consultation & Advanced Treatment Planning, which is required before any tinnitus treatment is recommended. Prices current as of October 2026 and subject to change.

The Lenire device and treatment program are generally not covered by Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, or private health insurance, so the $4,715 program is self-pay. Some diagnostic hearing and tinnitus tests performed before treatment may be covered separately when medically necessary. Benefits and patient responsibility vary by plan. Ask us about HSA/FSA payment options.

The diagnostic testing and the consultation are different services. Diagnostic hearing and tinnitus tests are typically billable to Medicare, Medicaid, and many commercial plans when medically necessary, subject to plan rules and cost-sharing. The separate $500 Tinnitus Consultation & Advanced Treatment Planning (advanced history, review of outside records, education and counseling, an individualized treatment plan, and care coordination) is self-pay. A $100 deposit when you schedule is credited toward it. Medicaid members sign a Notice of Non-Coverage for the consultation before the visit.

You can schedule to explore whether Lenire is right for you, but we do not prescribe or fit it on request. A comprehensive diagnostic hearing and tinnitus evaluation and a Tinnitus Consultation & Advanced Treatment Planning appointment come first. Lenire may be recommended as one part of an individualized plan, but it is not a standalone solution or the right approach for every patient.

The Tonguetip Stimulator (TTS) needs replacing after 180 hours of use. Additional stimulators are $425 each, and whether you need one depends on how much you use the device. If the Oto at-home program is recommended as part of your plan, it is a separate $500 program. For someone who completes the $500 consultation and then the $4,715 Lenire program, those two fees total $5,215, before any diagnostic-testing cost-sharing.

No. The Lenire Controller is labeled as a single-patient, multi-use device, and under the manufacturer’s U.S. instructions it must not be reassigned to another patient. Our providers cannot fit or reprogram a Lenire Controller that was assigned to someone else, even one that was never used. Lenire requires individualized assessment, professional programming, and clinical oversight.

Unless directed by a physician or dentist, Lenire is not used by people who have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other active implanted device; are pregnant; have epilepsy or another condition that can cause loss of consciousness; have reduced feeling in the tongue, or sores or inflammation in the mouth; have nerve pain in the head or neck; have Ménière’s disease; have tinnitus from an objective source; or have oral piercings. Possible side effects include mild tinnitus fluctuations, mild allergic reaction to device materials, mild tongue numbness or discomfort, dizziness and headaches. More at lenire.com/us.

Lenire is the first FDA-approved medical device for tinnitus treatment that uses bimodal neuromodulation. It combines soothing sounds delivered through headphones with gentle electrical pulses to the tongue via a small handheld device. This dual stimulation encourages neuroplasticity, helping your brain pay less attention to tinnitus over a treatment course your audiologist sets.

Sounds of Life Hearing Center in Concord Township (Painesville area), Ohio is the only certified Lenire provider in Lake County. We serve patients throughout Northeast Ohio, including Cleveland, Lake County, and surrounding areas. Both Dr. Curtis and Dr. Donovan are specially trained and certified in Lenire tinnitus treatment.

Your audiologist sets your treatment timeline. You use the device at home for two 30-minute sessions per day, unless your audiologist prescribes otherwise. Check-ups at 2, 6 and 12 weeks and at 6 and 12 months track your progress, and you get advice about continued use at home.

In the controlled clinical trial (TENT-A3) behind Lenire’s FDA approval, 70.5% of people with moderate or worse tinnitus had a meaningful reduction in tinnitus severity, and 88.6% of participants would recommend treating tinnitus with Lenire. In a 2025 real-world study of 220 U.S. patients published in Communications Medicine, 91.5% had a clinically meaningful reduction after 12 weeks. Results vary, which is why every plan starts with a full evaluation.

Lenire is intended for adults with moderate or worse tinnitus. It works best for patients who can commit to consistent daily use (two 30-minute sessions per day), follow a structured treatment plan, and engage with follow-up care. Whether Lenire fits is decided after your diagnostic evaluation and Tinnitus Consultation & Advanced Treatment Planning, based on your findings and goals.

If Lenire is not the best fit, we offer other options for tinnitus care, including Oto (an at-home program using sound therapy with CBT techniques alongside), tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), counseling, and hearing aids with tinnitus features. Our goal is finding the right solution for YOU, not just selling devices.

Yes. Oto is an at-home program that uses sound therapy, with exercises drawing on CBT techniques alongside. It runs alongside Lenire, and for some patients we start Oto first, to build skills for calming the stress response, coping better and sleeping better, so they are ready to begin Lenire.
