Hearing Test in Painesville, Ohio
A hearing evaluation is an essential part of overall health and wellness. Whether you already struggle to hear or simply want a baseline, we provide a personalized, pressure-free assessment to help you understand your hearing.

What Happens During a Hearing Evaluation?
We make your visit comfortable and stress-free, guiding you through each step:
Case History
We'll ask about your hearing challenges, lifestyle, and medical history to tailor the evaluation to your needs.
Otoscopy
We examine your ear canals to ensure they are clear of wax. Safe wax removal is provided if needed.
Diagnostic Hearing Test
Measures the softest sounds you can hear, assesses speech understanding in quiet and noise, and determines whether hearing loss is present and its type.
Additional Tests (If Needed)
Tympanometry, reflex testing, otoacoustic emissions, or ultra high-frequency testing.
Results & Recommendations
Your audiologist will explain your results clearly.
Two Service Options Available
If you schedule a diagnostic-only visit, we will provide a brief summary and recommendations. If you'd like an in-depth treatment plan and hearing aid consultation, we recommend scheduling (or upgrading to) a Communication & Functional Needs Assessment (CFNA), which allows dedicated time for this discussion.

What Our Patients Say
"I wish other health care professionals were like Dr Sarah Curtis and Jamie. This was the absolute most informative and thorough appointment I've ever been to. It must have lasted about 2.5hrs. Yes it's hearing test which take time but the conversation after the tests were very detailed and informative. There's no such thing as a silly question because mostly likely she's heard it all and has an answer. She is extremely knowledgeable because she truly enjoys helping people. They both do. Everyone there was professional and courteous. I truly wish more health care professionals dedicated this kinda of genuine dedication. I definitely feel I have the right education now to move forward with my health care. Thank y'all."

At Sounds of Life, we provide comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluations rather than basic screenings. Diagnostic testing may be covered by insurance. We do not offer "free hearing tests" because our evaluations are thorough, 60-90 minute appointments conducted by doctorate-level audiologists—not quick screenings at retail stores. Your hearing health deserves professional care.
Yes. Annual screenings are basic pass/fail checks that may miss mild or moderate hearing loss. A diagnostic hearing evaluation provides a complete picture of your hearing abilities, including speech understanding in quiet and noisy environments. Our comprehensive testing identifies issues screenings often miss.
For most insurance plans, no referral is needed. However, Medicare Part B and some HMO plans require a physician order for "diagnostic hearing test." If you need a referral, your physician can fax it to (440) 579-4086 or email hearforyou1@soundsoflifehc.com. We are happy to help navigate this process.
Absolutely not. Our approach is supportive and individualized. A full treatment discussion only occurs during a dedicated consultation (CFNA), which you choose to schedule. This ensures you have enough time to ask questions and make decisions at your own pace—no pressure, no sales tactics.
In most cases, an audiologist is the best first step. We perform comprehensive diagnostic testing to determine the type and degree of hearing loss. If a medical issue is suspected (such as sudden hearing loss, ear infections, or asymmetric hearing), we'll refer you to an ENT specialist. Many patients see us first and only need an ENT if medical treatment is indicated.
Our Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation takes about 60 minutes and includes case history, ear examination, comprehensive testing, and results review. Our Communication & Functional Needs Assessment (CFNA) takes about 90 minutes and adds in-depth lifestyle discussion and treatment planning. We never rush—your hearing health is too important.
